6. Colour grade

From D (colourless) down the alphabet. G is near-colourless: it looks white once set, especially in platinum or white gold.

Natural diamond grading report

The day the laboratory examined the diamond.

Unique to this stone. You can check it on the lab’s own website, and it is usually laser-inscribed on the girdle too. I send it to you before you decide.

The outline, and the pattern of facets. ‘Brilliant’ means facets arranged for the most sparkle.

For a round: smallest and largest diameter × depth, to a hundredth of a millimetre. The diameter is how big it looks face up, which matters more than weight.

Grading results

What the stone weighs, to a hundredth of a carat. Notice 1.01: stones just over a round number are priced at the next step up.

From D (colourless) down the alphabet. G is near-colourless: it looks white once set, especially in platinum or white gold.

How clean the stone is under 10× magnification. VS2 means very slightly included: the marks are hard to find even with a loupe, and invisible to the eye.

How well a round stone returns light, from Excellent to Poor. For a round, this is the line I read first.

Additional grading information

How finely the facets are finished. Excellent or Very Good is what you want.

How precisely the facets line up and meet. Poor symmetry leaks light.

Whether the stone glows under UV light. Faint or medium is common and rarely visible; I will tell you if it matters for a stone.

The report number, laser-written on the girdle and visible under magnification. It ties this paper to this stone.

Anything else the grader wants you to know: clouds not shown on the plot, treatments, or other notes. Read it every time.

Proportions

The stone in profile, drawn to its real angles and percentages. Table, crown and pavilion angles decide how much light comes back to your eye.

Clarity characteristics

A map of the stone’s inclusions, seen from the top (crown) and the bottom (pavilion). Red marks are inside the stone; green or black are on its surface.

What each mark on the plot is: a crystal, a feather (a tiny fracture), a cloud and so on. It also tells you which mark sets the clarity grade.

* Red symbols denote internal characteristics (inclusions). Green or black symbols denote external characteristics (blemishes). Diagram is an approximate representation of the diamond.

Grading scales

Where this stone’s colour sits on the full D-to-Z scale, from colourless to light yellow.

From Flawless to Included. Most beautiful stones sit between VVS and SI.

From Excellent to Poor. Given only for round brilliants in the D-to-Z range.

A real report carries a hologram, a security screen and microprint, so it can’t be copied. Ask to see the original.

Scan it on a real report to open the lab’s own record of the stone and compare every line.

Questions people ask

I know nothing about diamonds. Is that all right?

That is how most people begin. I will explain everything in plain words, and you will never be rushed or made to feel you should know more.

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

Whatever feels right to you. There is no rule and no minimum. Tell me your number and I will show you the best options within it.

Is there a minimum budget?

No. People come to me with ₹50,000 ($570) and with ₹50 lakh ($57,000). The stones differ; the honesty and the attention do not.

Do I need to be in Mumbai?

No. Most clients begin on WhatsApp or a video call and see their stones on video before anything is set. You are welcome at the Bharat Diamond Bourse, or in New York by appointment. I ship worldwide.

Are the diamonds certified?

Every diamond is certified by GIA or IGI, and I go through it with you line by line. Fancy colours are certified for natural origin of colour.

How is this different from a jewellery brand?

You pay for the diamond, the metal, the design and the making, with each one explained. Not for a name on the box.

Can you reset a family stone?

Yes. Send a few photographs and I will tell you honestly what the stone is and what it could become.
